The Chilling Murder of Saurabh Rajput: A Tale of Betrayal, Deception, and Justice

The tragic murder of Saurabh Rajput, a 35-year-old former Merchant Navy officer from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, has captivated national attention due to its chilling details and the complex web of relationships involved. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the case, from the background and events leading up to the crime, to the investigation, legal proceedings, and the broader societal implications.

Background and Relationship Dynamics

Saurabh Rajput married Muskan Rastogi in 2016, despite familial opposition. The couple resided in a rented accommodation with their six-year-old daughter. Over time, their marriage faced challenges, particularly after Saurabh discovered Muskan's extramarital affair with his friend, Sahil Shukla. Despite this revelation, Saurabh chose to remain in the marriage for the sake of their child.

Premeditation and Failed Attempts

Investigations revealed that Muskan and Sahil had been plotting Saurabh's murder for months. They made their first attempt on February 25, which was unsuccessful. Muskan, aware of Sahil's superstitious beliefs, allegedly manipulated him by creating fake Snapchat accounts to pose as Sahil's deceased mother, convincing him that killing Saurabh was divinely sanctioned.

The Murder and Dismemberment

On March 4, 2025, Saurabh returned home to celebrate Muskan's birthday. That evening, Muskan and Sahil allegedly drugged Saurabh by mixing sedatives into his food. Once he was unconscious, Sahil reportedly stabbed him to death while Muskan assisted. They then dismembered his body into approximately 15 pieces using sharp tools. To conceal the crime, they placed the body parts inside a large plastic drum, filled it with cement, and sealed it shut.

Concealment and Discovery

The drum containing Saurabh's remains was stored in a rented apartment in Meerut's Indira Nagar area. Muskan and Sahil attempted to maintain normalcy in their daily lives to avoid suspicion. However, Saurabh's sudden disappearance raised concerns among his family, leading them to file a missing person report. During the investigation, officers detected a foul smell emanating from the rented apartment. Upon searching the premises, they discovered the cement-filled drum containing Saurabh's dismembered remains.

Legal Proceedings and Aftermath

Muskan and Sahil were arrested and presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court, where they were remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. Outside the courthouse, a group of lawyers physically assaulted them, tearing Sahil's clothes. Police intervened to restore order and ensure their safety. In jail, both accused exhibited drug withdrawal symptoms and are currently receiving treatment through de-addiction programs and counseling.

Family and Community Reactions

The murder has deeply affected both families and the local community. Muskan's parents have publicly condemned her actions, expressing support for Saurabh's family and advocating for the death penalty for their daughter. Saurabh's mother, Renu Devi, recounted how their six-year-old granddaughter innocently revealed the crime by stating, "Papa drum mein hain," indicating she was aware of the murder and its concealment.

Psychological Manipulation and Societal Implications

This case highlights the extent of psychological manipulation involved, particularly how Muskan exploited Sahil's belief in the supernatural to coerce him into committing murder. The use of technology, such as creating fake social media accounts to deceive and manipulate, underscores the darker facets of digital platforms when misused.

Conclusion

The murder of Saurabh Rajput is a harrowing tale of betrayal, manipulation, and premeditated violence. As the legal process unfolds, it serves as a somber reminder of the complexities of human relationships and the potential for darkness that can lurk beneath seemingly ordinary facades. The case continues to evoke discussions on personal safety, the importance of mental health awareness, and the ethical use of technology in interpersonal relationships.
