The United States has intensified its military campaign against Yemen's Houthi rebels, launching a series of air and naval strikes targeting the group's leadership and infrastructure. This escalation comes in response to increased threats posed by the Houthis to international shipping routes in the Red Sea.

Details of the Military Strikes

On March 15, 2025, under the directive of President Donald Trump, the U.S. military executed comprehensive strikes against Houthi positions. The operation targeted radars, air defenses, and missile and drone systems, aiming to degrade the Houthis' capacity to disrupt maritime navigation. The USS Harry S. Truman, a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier stationed in the northern Red Sea, played a pivotal role in these operations, deploying fighter jets to carry out the attacks. 

The initial wave of strikes resulted in significant casualties. Reports indicate that at least 31 people were killed, including women and children, with over 100 others injured. The Houthi-run Health Ministry condemned the attacks, labeling them as war crimes. 

Houthi Retaliation and Ongoing Tensions

In retaliation, the Houthi rebels claimed to have launched missile and drone attacks targeting U.S. naval vessels, including the USS Harry S. Truman. The group described these actions as a direct response to the U.S. airstrikes. However, U.S. defense officials reported that these retaliatory attacks were unsuccessful, with all missiles and drones failing to hit their intended targets. 

The United States has expressed its determination to continue military operations until the Houthi threat to Red Sea shipping is neutralized. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized that the airstrikes would persist indefinitely to safeguard international maritime interests and deter further Houthi aggression.

The Houthis, a Shia Islamist militant group, have received backing from Iran, positioning them within the Iranian-led "Axis of Resistance."
