26/11 Accused Tahawwur Rana Extradited to India, NIA Takes Custody

Upon arrival, he will be taken into custody by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for further investigation and legal proceedings.

Background on Tahawwur Rana:

Tahawwur Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin, has been implicated in facilitating the 2008 Mumbai attacks that resulted in the deaths of over 170 individuals and injuries to more than 300. He is accused of assisting David Coleman Headley, who conducted reconnaissance missions for the attacks carried out by the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist organization. While a U.S. jury acquitted Rana of providing material support for the attacks, he was convicted on other charges related to the planning of the attacks and sentenced to over 10 years in prison. 

Extradition Process:

Rana's extradition follows the U.S. Supreme Court's recent denial of his petition to block the process. A team comprising NIA officers and intelligence agency officials traveled to the U.S. to complete the necessary formalities and escort Rana back to India.

In anticipation of his arrival, high-security arrangements have been made in both Delhi and Mumbai. Special security measures are being implemented in jails in these cities to accommodate Rana during his initial detention period.
