📜 History and Origins of Ratha Yatra

The word "Ratha" means chariot and "Yatra" means journey or procession. Ratha Yatra commemorates Lord Jagannath’s annual visit to his aunt’s temple—the Gundicha Temple—located about 3 km from the main Jagannath Temple in Puri.

  • Ratha Yatra is mentioned in ancient scriptures like the Skanda Purana, Padma Purana, and Brahma Purana.

  • It symbolizes Krishna’s journey from Gokul to Mathura, and also the universal concept of the soul’s journey toward salvation.

  1. Lord Jagannath – A form of Krishna/Vishnu.

Each deity is placed in a massive, beautifully decorated wooden chariot, constructed anew every year.

🪔 1. Snana Purnima

  • The deities are bathed with 108 pitchers of holy water and then kept away from public view in the Anasara Ghar (a period symbolizing recovery from illness).

🧵 2. Netrotsava (Naba Joubana Darshan)

  • After 15 days, devotees get the first glimpse of the rejuvenated deities, known as Naba Joubana Darshan.

🛕 3. Ratha Yatra (Chariot Pulling Day)

  • The deities are brought out in a grand procession to their respective chariots.

  • Lakhs of devotees pull the chariots with ropes—considered a sacred act that grants moksha (liberation).

  • The deities travel to Gundicha Temple, where they stay for 7 days.

🌀 4. Bahuda Yatra

  • The return journey back to the Jagannath Temple.

  • On the return, the deities are adorned in gold ornaments—a breathtaking sight.
