On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight AI‑171, a Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed into a hostel building near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport moments after takeoff. It plunged into the B.J. Medical College hostel, causing massive devastation and loss of life.

  • Flight Details: Flight AI‑171 departed at 1:39 pm IST with 242 people onboard (230 passengers, 12 crew). 

  • Mayday & Crash: Just 30 seconds after liftoff, the pilots issued a Mayday call as the aircraft flew unusually low with its landing gear down. It crashed at an altitude of just 625 ft. 

  • Ground Impact: The plane struck a residential doctors’ hostel and surrounding area, causing fatalities among both passengers and those on the ground. 


🧍 Casualties & Survivor

  • Fatalities: At least 204 bodies recovered from the crash site; the death toll may rise. 

  • Ground Victims: At least five people in the hostel were killed, and 41 more injured, including medical students. 

  • Survivor: A 40-year-old Briton, identified as Ramesh Viswashkumar (seat 11A), miraculously survived the crash and is currently hospitalized.
